Hello All, Just wondered if anyone had a link or lead to any bow making tutorials. My fifteen yr old son wants to make one for his girlfriend for Christmas, and i'm having a lot of trouble finding any step by steps. There just seems to nothing available, any info would be helpful. Thank you in advance, Rory |

I tread lightly and carefully in the face of potentially squashing the youthful enthusiasm of a young person wanting to embark on a craft, but.... Does he realize the scope of such an endeavor? I built my first guitar at 15. A bow however - to come out with something genuinely useful beyond an ornament of affection, I would say is an exponentially more daunting task. A bow may seem deceptively simple, but to come out as functioning well can be enormously complex. I suspect that the lack of concise tutorials may be largely due to the sense of futility found in those who may have considered presenting them. I doubt that anyone qualified to draft such a lesson would be able to create instructions short of a lengthy apprenticeship. |

I was trained as a bowmaker, and studied with at least 3 different well known teachers. back in the early 90/s . I wouldn/t discourage your son. You can get an inexpensive carbon fiber bow, and use that as a model. Start with an inexpensive wood such as osage orange. There are also a lot of specialized bowmaking tools. Violinforum .ca has a bow section . He will make many errors. in bending the stick . So a few dry blanks would help. |
