This is a continuation of this thread. http://luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=46620&hilit=leg+vice

I finally finished a leg vice I have been periodically working on.
It's made from an inexpensive veneer press screw converted with a couple of hardware store parts as shown in the original thread. That makes it considerably less expensive than using a full sized vice screw.

Because I wanted it to work for cellos and basses, I built the back jaw with a pivot system that accommodates the more severe fingerboard taper safely.
The hinge on the bottom has a bolt pivot that lines up parallel to a faceted hardwood plate. The screw nut can move without the threads binding.
It was meant to just be a prototype, but works well enough it will be the real thing for at least few years.

Thanks to all who shared their vice designs.

Brilliant little mod! I have on very rare occasion clamped a violin or bass in my vice, and if I were planning to do this at all regularly I would consider stealing that twist feature at putting in in to mine.

:) Poor Jimmy, if he only knew how much easier it would have been to set a cello on fire!
