In the past I was using a soundhole patch of either spruce at 2mm.080 or WRc at .100 or 2.5mm. no rosette on the ukes. It was usually vertical grain running at 90 deg to the top . lately I have switched to using a thin birch 2-2.5mm or poplar ply for the S. patch on my ukes to accamodate the rosette design . what are you using .?? I find the ply makes for a more solid area around the top so that there is less flattening of the area before gluing down the FB . |

I used a reinforcing patch for the first time on this guitar and used cut-off from the top. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I join the cutoffs from the waist aria to make a sound hole patch. So it basically doubles the top thickness around the sound hole. |

Thanks , thats what I/ve done as well using cutoffs from the top .But nowI find using uber thin plywood is more to my liking. and gives me a flatter area under the FB and UTB. Is anyone else using thin plywood as a soundhole patch ?? |

For the last uke I made I used two layers of the top material (off cuts) alternating the grain (essentially "plying" the wood ) as soundhole reinforcement. The top itself is just over 1/16th inch thick. |

I am in the process of French Polishing this Soprano now, trying to finish it up for a Christmas present. The top on this is .065 and I added a sound hole patch of .050, set cross grain at 90 degrees and made from 1 of Shanes' Lutz Spruce 2nds. Hoping to have it strung up by end of the week ![]() |
