I am hoping for some funds towards new finish equipment. I wouldn't want anyone putting out that much cash- as I am needing some pricey stuff. That's not the point of Christmas. |

My ask was simple this year, one of the Incra Miter gauges. My wife asked me earlier tonight what that "gauge" thing was I asked for. Good thing I like socks and underwear I guess. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The tool I would like to receive as a gift would be a 12 sliding compound miter saw. Here is the story about this top. In 2014 I purchased a timber sale from a guy in Wrangell, Alaska, that we eventually met and became freinds with as a result of this sale. He had planned on blocking the trees out and selling the block to some other outfit, but cut himself bad with chainsaw mid year and was unable. He contacted me, I asked him to give me measurements and pics of the trees, and a forest service friend took some increment bore samples for me and also provided pics of the trees, so I could see their "form". He asked for a certain amount of money to buy it.. I doubled what he asked for, to help him out and I thought the wood was worth that amount to a log seller. The crew, went over there in end of Jan 2014 and spent 2 weeks camping. SE Alaska Winter camping mind you Rain, snow, slush falling from the sky. Bone chilling penetrating wet cold. Anyway, there was 4 trees. 2 were blow downs and 2 were compromised standing trees with the tops blow out Lots of defect from blown out tops, rotten hearts and breakage. They, all 4 trees, with a gross volume of 16,000 board feet, produced 9 cords of guitar block. 2 of the trees had a lumpiness in their skin at butt logs, under the bark. Lumps similar to your knuckles. But the fiber was straight and they hand split real nice guitar bolts. The lumpiness of the skin makes for a little bit of a jiggle in the grain when cut VG for soundboards.. Perfect VG cuts [or 1-2 degree off VG is sometimes better] of these boards, produce a light curly looking top. But just off a couple degrees more, and more figure of the lumps is captured, producing a board that is more a quilt or pillow looking effect. About the tone. The wood is quite lightweight and the fiber straight as far as grain slope is concerned, with the fiber running virtually end to end. They Tap Mavalus, with a sustain that is well quite sustaining. Like 3-4 seconds. We put 6 sorts of Dread/jumbo on the shelf/pallets of these type. 2A-3A and 4A of both the light quilt and light curly. The lesser grade, because of stronger color and birth mark blotches of color and knot shadow went to the regular "B",#2 or 1A sorts. It's more batch graded, that is graded to other trees that have this quilt/curl character. Ther are not many trees like this. Some lumpy trees, are toooo lumpy and not suitable for soundboards. This is the 2A Light quilt sort, with the bolder grain. A great sounding soundboard and a good representation of what normal is from 400-500 year old, olg growth sitka trees. This is one of the first 8pk flat rate shipping packages we posted back in June. They did very well, sales wise, and we've received lots of compliments from their tonal properties from many who purchased them. |

Man, I just love wood that has a story behind it. Thanks for sharing that Brent. As for tools, I really can't think of anything I need in the finish shop, I guess that's a good thing but don't get me started on guitar building tools! ![]() |

I put in my request for another SnapOn L.E.D. shop light to remove the last poorly lit spot near my sander. The guitar I'm building is for my wife, so she is motivated to insure a quality job. |

Just once, could the firewood delivery service accidentally bring me a truckload of wood like that? Beautiful. Since i am gearing up for a hobby-level workshop, starting with nothing... i need everything. Top on my list though is Power! Working off two extension cords. For a real tool ... Santa's elves are busy building me a rosette cutter for my dewalt 611 trimmer. Ugly prototype but i think it will work nicely... Not quite ready to post a photo but it's based on a couple of pics that were supplied in a recent thread. Infinitely adjustable, easy to make, and cost me a total of $1.29 and i could have shaved another $0.26 had i not over-built. ![]() |

I wish I could build faster so I could use more of that awesome wood ![]() As for a tool, I'd like a block plane blade that can cut African blackwood without dulling instantly. |

One tool? How am I supposed to pick just one? I guess a new set of gauged nut files will fit in the stocking nicely. Steve |

Awesome to hear the story and love the pics with it! I would like a dust collection system or air filtration system... eventually both. A bigger band saw or table saw or even just some nice rulers and squares would be nice though. Merry Christmas! |

A thickness sander. This will be a self bought gift when I get paid for the cabinet job that I'm working on, and probably not until February. Good thing I'm not a stickler for on time Christmas gifts! Alex |

So neat to see the story behind the wood. Santa could bring me a riser block for my bandsaw so I can try a little re-sawing. That would be nice. |

All I really need in my shop is a little extra time - but when I have that I always like to share it with friends and family. But if it had to fit under the tree, a dedicated hot glue pot or the Lee Valley mini plunge router base sure would be cool. |

The one tool I would love for my shop is big ol' can of PATIENCE. Taking the time to do each step correctly and not be in such a hurry to move on to the next step. I can do well, but perfection eludes me. Thanks to Lance and Brent for adding some luthier magic to the season !!! |
