Post subject:  Protecting a light colored fingerboard?

In my endless quest to try not to use tropical woods I built a fun little ukulele using olive from our urban forestry program. It is really nice to work with and has an attractive light yellowish tint striped with brown color. Only problem is that I have played this guitar less than 6 hours and already finger stains are starting to show.

I have never used a light colored fingerboard before, so I don't know if this is normal. Even my old Strat had rosewood. Is there anything to be done to protect the fingerboard from turning instantly grungy? The fingerboard was polished up the grits to 2000, and I have since cleaned it with Murphy's Oil Soap, a brush, and treated it with Feed-N-Wax.

Logically speaking, you can either stain the board to a color similar to finger grunge, or put a hard clear finish on the board. Lots of Fender guitars have had maple fingerboards finished with lacquer. Eventually the lacquer wears through, but that takes a lot of playing.
Since you have already waxed it, it would be hard to get it clean enough to finish. You may find that the wax slows down the finger marks.

Appling thin CA with a dab of paper towel comes to mind. The fretboard will have to be free of wax of course. It should give protection and be easy to touchup when needed.

I would test on scrape first.

I have done a fretboard with CA, make sure you have good ventilation. I don't know about a paper towel, I think I used some plastic food wrap around my finger to spread it around.

To spread CA I use a Q tip. The tip gets hardened by the CA but will still move it around.
