The tradition continues... although I must admit my first thought was that "burn one" meant something else. Not allowed in SC, though I suppose. I recall a photo of a burning mandolin on this forum. |

I can't remember what my second thought was....  John guitar bon fires are very cool. Dave does that too with the donated beaters that we get that are too far gone to repurpose and give to the vets and homeless folks that we give guitars to. There is something very satisfying about it too. I just moved into a condo and will have to go back to my nephew with his beer truck. When I lived in the country I would just use them for target practice in my back yard but can't do that now that I'm in town. A decade ago when I lived in another condo we would have my nephew drive over them at 30 mph with his fully loaded beer truck. The sounds reminded me of heavy metal vomit music.... tuned in low C....

I don't know why, but this brings two things to mind: 1. The scene in the movie Office Space when they take that printer out to the desert and beat it to death because of its bad attitude. This guitar must have really made you angry! 2. The story of Saint Lawrence. He was martyred by roasting him on an iron grate over a fire. God gave Lawrence the strength to quip in the midst of the torture that they should turn him over, because he was done on that side. I wonder if there was still some life left in this poor guitar when it was roasted. I hope not! I should probably not anthropomorphize guitars as much as I do. |

My first venture into this craft went so poorly back in the 80's that after saving the guitars I made that didn't play for crap or look very nice for over a decade I burned all three of them in a bonfire when we moved 15 years ago. I swore I would never build another guitar..... And now look where I am....... |

Nice! I have a carcass in the shop that was decapitated in a car accident. Guy wanted to know if it was worth fixing (ah.........no). A couple of frets were not down tight, a couple hinged up and hanging on by one corner of the tang, and a couple gone altogether. The neck decelerated so quickly at impact, the frets got yanked by their own momentum! I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Ever since, I've wanted to swing a guitar from the body end at a pole from a speeding car. Just to confirm for science of course. If anyone get's to it before me, let me know.  Hey John, I notice you need an avatar photo. Just sayin.

I've burned a few things, but never a guitar. The last one that was beyond repair was when I was in Alaska and it was a bit cold for an outdoor fire and there was about 5 feet of snow. So I had to go WWF it. Looks like you were early enough in the process though, which I know doesn't make it any better. Back then I had a very tight shop space (and I'm a bit of a bull in a china shop as it is) and as I was applying finish I turned around for something and the box fell about 4 feet off the bench to its end. Still ticks me off to this day, that was a really cool guitar. Anyway- better luck next time! |

2 tops, 2 backs, 3 rounds of scraping the entire finish off... And I was going to have to scrape it back off again AND put on back #3... Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. |

I worked in a guitar warranty shop. Sometimes the customer would just get a new guitar and headquarters asked us to mail the junked guitar, taken apart, back to them to make sure we weren't fixing and selling them under the table. At first we took them apart slowly by hand. Then we discovered that if you take an acoustic guitar and slam it hard enough flat on its back onto a concrete floor, the shock wave traveling through the guitar will cause every glue joint in the guitar to fly apart at once. The hit has to be flat on the back for this trick to work. Fast, fun, and a wonderful noise. |

Dang... one company my old shop worked with would just say "send us a picture" of the "deactivated" guitar. Naturally, we obliged with gusto. They were cheap plywood G.S.O's though, and I was always amazed at how much force it took to really tear them apart. Except for the bridges, of course- those peeled right off! Would never have burnt them though; too much plastic fumes. |
