Just finished this. New bridge, saddle, nut, tuners, refret, fingerboard redo, logo, case. Pretty?

Mike, that's not just pretty, it's Pretty Georgeous.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

We do them often too and there is a video on our site about replacing the genuine, imitation pl*stic bridges.

This one looks fantastic Mike and from here it looks like a new instrument!! Great job!!!

Great work, Mike! I doubt it looked that good when it was brand new!

Well, the pictures hide a lot of age. The finish is pretty crazed on the sides. Some crazing on top. Yet, new frets, level board, and new bridge, saddle, pins, nut & Gotoh tuners do spruce it up. I had a nylon cutter do the Gibson logo. Was way easier. Thanks! Appreciate the kind words.

Mike

Mike

Who/what is a nylon cutter? A sign maker?

One gorgeous instrument. I had a 1966 natural/cherry bought new but it never looked that good. Loved the tone but I couldn't handle the narrow neck.

There are sign makers out there that use computers and digital printers that can cut stuff like that from sticky nylon. You just lay the logo down, press, and remove outside layer and logo remains. I tried two approaches. One was a nylon stencil, lay it down and paint logo. Mixed results. The other was the positive logo. Worked great.

It's beautiful. Are there concerns with reproducing the logo like that?

In the strictest sense, maybe. But practically, in this case, it was not a concern. Feels like paint, and looks like paint. And it can easily removed and done the other way.
