Hi There. I haven't posted any guitar pics for a bit and HEY! Not too many others have either. Remember. Everyone loves photos.

Anyway. This was a cool build. My friend and customer spent a lot of his career in the bush as a timber cruiser on Vancouver Island. He had moved to the very beautiful Savary Island where he acquired a Lucas saw mill and built the Savary Island Resort. Very cool spot. Being a logger type he fell a lot of trees on and around his property including a massive Maple and a Yew that was about 1000 years old. His neighbour wanted the Yew out of his yard. Mike, the customer, milled them up. We met a number of years later in the gym and we were talking guitars and I mentioned I build them. And he's like "well hey"!

He brought me some Maple and Yew boards. A little spalted but not too far gone. But no neck material. I didn't think this B &S would look very good with a creamy Maple neck but he said he had a chunk on the Island. Off we went on the Lund water taxi to the Island. He had a massive block, 24" x 24" by about 8 ft of Curly. If I can figure out how to resize a photo from my android phone I would post a pic. We took an Alaskan mill to it because he had since sold his Lucas. It was a little rough. Maple needs to be processed within the first month or 2 of falling or it starts to decay. This had been sitting for years. We took off a couple big slabs and I got enough for a 2 - neck blank.

And there's the result.

Curly Maple back, sides and neck
Bearclaw Sitka (photos don't do justice)
Yew bindings and bevel
End Grain Spalt Maple Rosette (Thanks Brian!)
Gold MOP (DePaule)

We both could not be happier with the tonal outcome. Bright, even and great bass. He sprung for an Anthem P/U and this guitar deserves it.

Thanks for the advice from my pals here on my first Venetian cutaway. And thanks for looking. Happy Easter.

Cheers,
Danny

And when I told him DePaule messed up and double shipped the shell and II have the other half of of the neck blank he said, "Can you build me a 12 string"! haha Why not eh!

Thanks for posting Danny, an interesting back story and a lovely build.
Hope to see the 12 when it's done too.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

A beauty! Is the heel sloped? There was a discussion about that a week or two ago. I like the look.

Exceptional work, Danny. Instruments with an interesting backstory are destined to be heirlooms. Well done.

Nice Danny, I need to go check on my stash because I have some backs pretty similar.
It better still be there.

Thanks Colin! I love a good back story. I'll have to post a couple photos of one I did last year for a friends grandson. Made from a couple of Yellow Cedar logs his great great grandfather dragged up the beach in my part of the world. Although I've been trumped by a friend of mine. Keep your eyes peeled for when Rueban Forsland goes more public with his latest project. I will say it involves a long deceased, very well known guitar player.

Thanks Brad! Yup it is. Pirated the idea from a great BC luthier and all around cool guy, Michael Dunn. I could have made the angle more pronounced and possibly a little thinner but after grinding away on it for about an hour with a decent rasp I proclaimed, "Good enough". End grain Maple is HARD.

I am a sucker for curly maple... You will have to tell us what "went bad" on that guitar - it looks fantastic.

Gorgeous guitar! I love that sloped heel! I might just shamelessly steal that idea... ;)

Danny, Beautiful guitar. I love the curly maple, especially the neck. Your heel design is interesting. It's similar to the one I posted a while back. Yours is more angular than mine. The majority of folks that commented didn't seem to like my design. I think it may have been the neck lamination configuration that threw it off. Since that photo, I carved it to a symmetrical shape. Again, I like yours. ...really nice work.
