Here is the latest Luthier Tips du Jour video - In this video I show how I use twill tape to wrap the guitar during the binding process. This video as well as all my other videos are available via my website, http://www.obrienguitars.com/videos , LMI's website or on youtube. |

You did a video or mentioned twill tape perhaps 8 or 9 years ago and I've been using it ever since....Had a couple of elastic bands that I was using previously break while I was pulling tight and got smacked hard across the eyes and face. Never happens with twill tape. |

That "friend" of your sure has had some bad luck! Thanks for the vid. I've been struggling to come up with a pattern for wrapping the guitar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Robbie, the only other Tip du Jour I've seen of you doing binding was one where you used CA. What kind of glue were you using on this one? I'm guessing it would have to be something with some open time like Titebond, LMI white or liquid hide glue. |

I usually use the LMI instrument glue for bindings and purflings unless I have a super complicated scheme that requires more open time. In that case I may use fish glue or even dry fit everything and use CA glue. |

I love wrapping up guitar bindings, there's just something about it I find enjoyable. I use the same tape however I have found that over time it just rolls up on itself and looks like rounded rope anyway. So another option is just to use sash cord. If anything it needs to be a cotton cord, nylon will simply not work because it wants to slip off. Couple things I notice differently is that you first tape the whole guitar up, that's probably a good idea, but I like to just hold it in place with one piece of tape at the neck and one on the waste then I wrap around till there is about 6in left at the heal and leave that unglued so that I can then cut the scarf joint perfect before wrapping up the rest of it. I've noticed in the past when I think I have everything perfect and then go to wrap it up tight it messes up the scarf joint. That's probably an issue with technique in the first place but I found something that works for me anyway. Also... I would never be able to switch to left handed, you must have been a switch hitter or something ![]() |
