Some of you may have noticed I have not been around much the past month or so. Unfortunately there is a reason for this.

Due to issues of health, I am forced to suspend my guitar finishing operations. I am not quitting the guitar business by any means, just scaling down to something I can manage at this point with my current limitations. I will still be doing fretwork, repairs and such and will likely do small finish work on my own repairs as I am able.
Thanks.

So sorry to hear that. It is dang near impossible to have a small business today. Having to scale back for health reasons is a terrible double whammy. I hope you have good support and recover quickly.

Hey Brian, sorry to hear that. Hope things improve soon!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well that's scary news, I hope it isn't related to the finishing. Hope you recover quickly.

Brian;
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 9 years ago.
PSA went fro 2-3.5 in 6months-then to 5 in 3
more months.

I have a family history of it so I always got it checked.
The doc up here send me to specialist in Albany N.Y.

After some tests & the results came back a cancer -
I said let's snuff the poop out.

I Robotic surgery on may the 16th 2008.

I've been cancer free since-we caught in time.
Get 2 or 3rd opinions-ask questions .

I was in stage 2-3 -aggressive cells.

What are your numbers?

Mike [:Y:]

Mike - I was thinking PSA meant Public Service Announcement, but maybe not... Congratulations to you for having beat your cancer. I had a scare related to that in 2007.

I hope a speedy recovery for you, Brian.

I thought he meant PSA as in Public Service Announcement. I was all set to make a Pressure Sensitive Adhesive comment until I opened the thread and saw the seriousness of it. I'm Hoping it is not THAT PSA!

I'm glad you were able to catch it in time and beat it! the PSA test is definitely saving lives. So, lets add that to this public service announcement; Men don't blow off your PSA tests when the time comes.

The wrong kind of PSA for me also. In my situation, the Docs recommended Radiation Therapy which I had last year. So far the cancer has been knocked down and is still silent. The other thing it knocked down is my golf game. Lost a 15% of my distance. Oh well, small price to pay.

Brian, hope you bounce back from whatever it is. Best of luck.

PSA did mean public service announcement....I had no idea it related to cancer....

I thank you all for the well wishes. Unfortunately this is not something I will recover from.....the good news it is in itself not fatal. It is also nothing brand new but rather a sudden progression of an existing problem. About 20 years ago is when it really started and it took 5+ years of testing and examinations to get an answer. It is definitely not related to my work, i was tested multiple times for exposure to everything short of radioactivity including any compounds found in tropical woods.... The problem is neurological in nature and degenerative, it is a problem deep within the brain and highly untreatable. I have been on a plateau for several years and was managing to get things done at a certain level. That has recently changed and I can no longer count on being able to work for stretches much beyond an hour straight before needing a sizable break. This kinda puts the screws to running batches of 12 guitars at a time through my spray booth and I am just a one man show.

So again I must reinvent myself and adjust and adapt.....Working at the bench is easier on me and there is almost nothing there I cannot just set my tools down and walk away from when I have too. So that is what I will do along with a build or two a year for as long as I can. I'm looking at it as a semi-retirement! Attitude is everything.

So sorry to hear. I can sympathize completely. Priorities get re-arranged quickly when health is involved. There is so much more to life than "work". At least you don't have a "cold quit" facing you, that may make it a bit easier for you to consider over time...
