Came in this morning and this was leaning on my desk. These things happen sometimes (pick your stringed instrument) and often result in a "value vs repair cost" discussion. This one is a Chinese Gibson so I wasn't thinking real positive thoughts ... then I checked my email.

The email -- I think I can help with this one laughing6-hehe

Had a lawyer bring me an old Fender acoustic once with a warped neck.... I told him to turn it into a flower pot.

I had someone ask me to build them the same thing as the picture not realizing it would be infinitely easier to take the top off an existing cheap guitar. :)

I put in the "don't do that" thread the idea that you should try to keep cat pee out of your guitar, because it apparently smells like cat pee forever, but it just occurred to me that a guitar body without a top might make a distinctive litter box. It might be a good idea to seal the inside with epoxy before subjecting it to the pee.

Looks like mostly succulents planted there so you may not have too many humidity issues.

While the display-case fate is a good end for a Chinese "Gibson," it's not always ideal.

From: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/5013093/ns/us ... bApsIqQxYg

LOS ANGELES — A 320-year-old missing Stradivarius cello is back with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, having possibly avoided becoming the most expensive CD rack ever.

A nurse found the $3.5 million instrument made by master craftsman Antonio Stradivari lying by a trash bin — and almost had her boyfriend convert it into a CD holder, police said Tuesday. The instrument is damaged but reparable, a restorer said.

Melanie Stevens, 29, discovered the cello about a mile from where it was stolen, still inside its silver-coated plastic case. She put it in her car’s trunk for two days. Then Stevens asked her boyfriend, a cabinetmaker, to either repair the instrument or convert it into a unique CD holder, Detective Donald Hrycyk said. She said she didn’t know its significance until she noticed a news report May 7.

eek

I have so many questions. How do you steal a 3.5 million dollar one of a kind instrument? What do you hope to do with it? did they not know the value? How did it end up on the side of the road? Who still uses CDs?

Good thing I have so many answers.
1. Carefully.
2. Sell it at a profit.
3. Probably, give or take 3.5 Mil
4. Either fell or was placed there.
5. I do, or at least I plan to once my 8-track player quits.

Housekeeper: You've ruined that piano!
Inspector Clouseau: What is the price of one piano compared to the terrible crime that's been committed here?
Housekeeper: But that's a priceless Steinway!
Inspector Clouseau: Not anymore.

Steve, your wall hanger planter box inspired me to give it a try. This guitar was given to me for parts, of which there were none in usable condition. Looked like it sat out in the weather for quite a long time. Fun project.ImageImage
