I am looking for a us based supplier that can sell us quantity sets of uke tuners at a reasonable price . I like schertler and have a set of rubner tuners . Something priced in the middle range as per the above co . As well if you have used these tuners would appreciate some feedback on why you liked these tuners in particular ??? thank you

I work with Jason at Hipshot, and order both their open and closed gear guitar tuning machines.

Ratios are relatively steep - 18:1 on the open gear, 15:1 on the closed. I would say this is way overkill on a nylon instrument, but I haven't had any complaints that it takes too long to tune (once tuned up).

I have a personal preference for the open gear for aesthetic reasons - I like the quasi open gear look. Most of mine are gold, but the black with the brass gear matches well with certain builds. Also, the button shape is uncommon (matches my bass), and can be ordered with more "standard" shapes.
When I've displayed instruments at the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii Exhibition, I'm always asked about the tuning machines. Sort of nice being the only guy with them. But I'll share the "secret" here.

Here's a plus: Made in USA.

I can't say I'd compare them to Rubners, but the "tightness" of the gears and lack of slop puts it above Grover and Gotoh (for example), for me. And the price is, well, you'll know when you call.

I had a hard time loading up this vid (I could hear the audio), but in the first minute or so, Aaron (not me) mentions the tuning machines and describes it as "precise". His words, not mine.

Nice Uke!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Are you looking for only us-made products? Geared? Friction?

I've tried to find out where Grover's are made, but haven't had much luck. Or about getting quantity discount. Their Champion pegs are pretty nice friction tuners.

Goto's are available at a good discount if you order directly from them. I think it's a 2K$ minimum. I have inquired with some others about going in on some.

Hi aaron , never thought about hipshot, ?? they do have a good retro look , nice mellow tenor uke , your guy plays it vy smooth and jazzy. Like it. Will check out hipshot , and yes I use the friction grover old timey friction pegs I only use them on soprano and concert ukes with a smaller headstock for a retro look . I have been using grover for awhile they are OK , Some of the chinese suppliers have many different types of uke tuners and their quality is almost as good as Grover but for less $$$ . Does anyone out there have experience with the swiss schertler ??? Not sure of the spelling . Thanks . I did go ahead an order a set of 4 black open style tuners from hipshot.

Schertlers are very nice and smooth. I'd venture to say the smoothest tuners you will ever find. But the look is very different and not to everyones taste.
