I just moved to Michigan where high test Everclear is not sold. I believe it is available in Ohio? Toledo is not far from me.

I don't know about Ohio, but you can get it in Kentucky, if that is a trip you can make at some point.

You need a permit for it in Virginia. I'm traveling to Florida next week so I just stop off in Georgia and stock up. You might check your state to see if you can get a permit for it. Virginia is all government runned stores we call ABC stores, Alcohol Beverage Control, if that doesn't sound like a government agency I don't know what does!. But I imagine if Michigan has private stores it might be similar.

I live in Cincy. I've only been able to find it at Party Source across the river in KY.

If you head down this way stop on by.

I did a quick Google search on liquor stores in Toledo. I called one just over the state line and he informed me that 190 proof is illegal in Ohio. And, if a seller ever comes across a bottle of 190 proof he/she needs to turn it in to the state. So, that shoots that!
I can kick myself for not stocking up before I left Missouri.
Next stop is Indiana?

Is denatured alcohol out of the equation?

Dan, "Denatured" just means undrinkable, as you know. Various brands use different percentages and different poisonous solvents. There is no standard for "denatured". Some of these denaturants, besides being unpleasant to work with, actually interfere with successful French polishing. Some are slower and some are faster evaporating than ethyl alcohol. To add to the problem, the formulas used by manufacturers change without notice. It is probably based on what solvents are cheapest on the market at a given time. The Klean Strip Green alcohol will work in a pinch but I would prefer the unadulterated stuff.
Pure grain alcohol is dependable, works like a charm, and doesn't have adverse health effects.
Just found out it is available in Indiana, about 80 miles away. I doubt whether I'll make a special trip but will definitely make a detour when I head west to any degree.

KY used to be home and have spent a lot of time in TN. Good to know of availability in these two States as well.

I can hear Steve now: G**D*** REVENUERS!!!!!

Everclear really is a joy to work with, as opposed to any denatured alcohol, so I always try to make sure I have enough before I travel through Kentucky. If I don't have enough, I stop and visit the Whole Foods of liquor stores: Liquor Barn. Nicer than your average Kroger.

Behkol is my next in line favorite, but it's a drive to get that, too.

This is the route I went. An ATF agent came out to my shop and checked everything out and signed off on the permit. Now I just buy it at the liquor store with a permit even though it's illegal here as well.

I had no problem buying it in Indiana. I prefer it for French Polish.
