Hi,

Anyone use these?

Is this best of both open and closed geared tuner combined? or just combination or cons from both?

Share your experience and/or thoughts.

Cheers!

“It is said that the performance and durability of open-gear machine heads is inferior to sealed-gear (Rotomatic) types. Because the bushing is physically separate from the machine head body it is difficult to accurately position the string post through it when mounting onto the guitar. To solve these problems the SXB510 series includes a centering guide at the base of the body to ensure a flush fit combined with Rock Solid string posts. Also, the SXN510 series employs a nut mount system and can be installed as a direct replacement into the same holes drilled for Rotomatic style tuners.
The improved performance and durability which the SX510 series provides, thanks to GOTOH’s unique design and manufacturing, gives you the chance to experience a sound you’ve never heard”

How do they compare in weight to Grover Sta-tites? They look a bit heavier. The principal virtue of open back tuners is weight saving on the peghead to better balance the guitar.

Gotoh SXN510 from Goth web: 0.3730 lbs
Grover Sta-Tite 18:1 from Stemac: 0.3520 lbs

(Gotoh's quote, not SkyHigh) I guess I don't know what I'm missing.

I break tuners into two groups - press in bushings and screw in bushings. I further divide them into "vintage" style (open back, 3 on a plate) and "modern" style mostly closed back, some of the fancy cases. I'm sure that screw in bushings give the shaft better support and alignment, I like the looks of press in bushings better. I'm sure that enclosed gears have some advantages but I like open better on the style of guitars that I build. I build a lot of clones of established vintage guitars - I tend to use tuners that look "correct" on that particular instrument (Gibson for example).

But I didn't realize that a tuner could give me a sound I've nevere heard.....

Martin used some very thin washers under the bushings on guitars with Gotoh open back tuners for a number of years. On nearly every one of these we've seen, at least one of the bushings has moved and provided room for the washer to vibrate between bushing and peghead. If not aware of the nature of the problem, it can be a difficult problem to address. Def a sound which should never be heard.

Finally an open back tuner with a threaded nut bush. I'm in! The press in bushes that come across my bench are either missing or loose. The threaded bush makes it easy to get proper alignment insuring smoother operation while still offering a more vintage look. I'd much rather have 2 pair of these over the Waverly tuners which always feel clunky and inprecise... This is only my opinion which you are welcome to share... beehive

Cheers, M

They are definitely lighter than rotomatics and very close in weight to Sta tites. Being competitively priced I think they should do well .

I would like to give those a try. Skyhigh - Do you know a source for them in the US? So far, I've only found a few e-bay sellers and JAPARTS.CA.

I like that idea. I’d try a set. Seems like no matter how hard I try I frequently get a tight Waverly.

I'm with you. I absolutely hate press-in bushings.

With these, anyone know where I can get smaller diameter washer? I don’t understand why it has to be so big...

Got it done. Super easy and fit right in without any mods.
