My friend and neighbor Kevin is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Education at NC State University. He loves making things and has been very curious about the guitar making process. I offered to help him build a guitar. He has a lot of enthusiasm, patience, and a good esthetic sense. He has a huge amount of red oak that he bought at a bargain price and he wanted to use that. I saw reason not to. We looked through his pile and found a very nicely quartered and figured board. We cut is up and planed it down for back and sides. The board wasn't quite wide enough for the back so I contributed a piece of leopard wood for a 3 piece back. I think it will look quite nice. He chose an L-00 shape. He is making good progress. It is a pleasure teaching someone that really wants to learn. I told him that people pay good money for guitar making training. But, I am enjoying it as much as he is. I'm even contributing materials. |

I hope he will prove to be not too much of a distraction and interrupt your concentration. Nice thing about NOT having a long list. Aside from the fact that my shop was too small, I really was always stressed by the length of my list and just didn't have the time to break concentration. It slowly turned from hobby to insane job with no time to take time off. One of the worst things that you can do is to turn away from the "hobby". How fortunate that you have the time to teach someone with enough interest. That is a blessing... |

Since I don't build for a living (and being retired), working with Kevin isn't a distraction. It's a pleasure. I can post more photos as we go along... |

Kevin finally finished his L-00 build yesterday. The guitar turned out quite nice in every way. It looks good and sounds good (already). He had a lot of patience and stuck to it. I told him he should be very proud. |

It's cool that you are doing that, Steve. Good on you. I got a kick out of the photo of Kevin shaving the back braces with a glass of sweet tea (we know it's sweet tea, because you are in NC) right there on the Workmate. I usually have to either use a screw top plastic bottle if I want to have it on my bench, or leave the glass over on my desk, because I will either drop something gross in the darn thing or knock it over. Kevin must be far more coordinated than I am. |

I love helping someone make an instrument. Explaining how you do a process forces you to think that process through in a way that is quite different from what you do by yourself. Steps that are awkward or even unnecessary can become quite clear and, as a result, you can improve your own work. |
