Post subject:  X-brace height

Hello,

I made an adjustment to the jig I’ve been using to make the x-brace and didn’t catch that the result is 12.5mm height at the center instead of the 14.5mm I had been using. It had to do with how much of the brace was exposed in the radius jig which caused it to be shorter.

There are a lot of factors here, but I wonder what some of the typical heights are that you end with after voicing your tops? Is 12.5 (roughly 1/2”) asking for implosion city?

FWIW, I use 12.5 for the tonebars usually.

I think I’m asking for trouble and will likely just make a new jig that gets me back to where I was before. In any case... thoughts?

Brad

Based on Martin and Gibson dreadnought plans, my x-braces are 5/8" tall at the X for dreadnoughts. X-braces for my smaller body guitars are 1/2" tall at the X.

Yep, 5/8 for dreads and OM/000 and 1/2 for size 2’s.

The D-35 x-bracing is 1/2"x 5/16"...essentially 000 bracing for the back and 00 bracing on the top. They seem to hold up about as well as most of the other 1960's and 1970's versions of the dreadnaught.

Same as JD and TK. It's all part of the system though. Where does your scallop start, how aggressively you thin them, Bridge plate, xcap, etc.

I tend to end up with the X braces about 1/2" at the crossing on six strings, more or less. A lot will depend on how thick you make your top, and the wood, of course.
