What’s wrong with using fiber? Just want real wood? If so I get it.
I also wonder how thinned ebano would bend, if at alll..

I guess you just never thought of fiber. Where can I buy sheets ?

I do wonder about ebano too and I’d like to try it.

While fiber is good for purflings and other narrow lines I find it not so good for headplates and backstraps.
Imo it tends to be difficult to sand and can show up somewhat grey under finish. I've used fiber from LMI.
Nothing wrong with it, just seems to be the nature of the beast. That's been my experience. Wood from now
on for me sir.

RC sells sheets of fiber in a few thicknesses and colors. I like to use their white fiber for purfling lines because I like the brilliant white. I made a jig (of course I did! ;)) to cut it on the bandsaw into strips to use for purfling. I use their black as well for body purfling but for rosette I use dyed black maple sometimes (the maple comes from SM IIRC).

Looks interesting. Have you tried it?

I never would have guessed that all these potential alternatives exist. I guess they all have to be tried to find out what works best for a specific application.

posted on here a little while ago about the caul/mold I use for the back strap clamping.
while I don't use thick ebony and use thinner walnut burl, it might help.

I bought this great moldable plastic pellets, just heat them up, shape them to your back strap/volute shape, let it set, cut off excess and you have a really strong clamping caul, might help with the shaping process

Haha! Funny you should mention that. Having seen that previous thread and after this experience of the backstrap, I just ordered a bag of those plastic pellets. Next time...

Hi Bob,
No, I haven't tried it. I have worked with unbacked wood veneers a fair amount so I am assuming it would work similarly. If someone wanted to lay up a set for a black bodied guitar It might be an interesting way to go. Certainly cheaper than buying a set of ebony.
