Anyone got a clever idea for a simple Bwb rosette ring. I don't have a bending pipe and when I make the lines small enough, they look too small!

If you want the lines to be "thicker" then cut the rosette channel wider and inlay the lines BBWWBB instead of BWB. By varying the number of lines of the same color you can make them appear as thick and thin.

I was thinking of that but thought the double white/ maple would get bad glue lines?

You could do a mock up and see how it looks to you. Fiber might work better than wood and keeping things tight in the channel can reduce glue lines.

Heat up a pan on the stove and bend against that.

I found veneer in several thickness, black up to 1/16". Maple in several but not as thick as black. I have cut 1/32" on bs, but uniform thickness is problem. Actually I get 1/32" strips on table saw consistently but just 1" wide. Pulling through 120 sandpaper cleans them up.

Dipping in hot water will enable you to bend them.

This is great thanks everyone. I bought black .60 veneer and was cutting maple and thicknessing on the drum sander. Is the sander not accurate enough?

Double Maple will definitely have a glue line. Double black not so much. Double white not sure.

I think I could only get to within .002ish on the thickness sander which is pretty close. There is usually a bit of thickness sander snipe also albeit not much. So make them extra long.

A curling iron gets plenty hot to bend purfling, depending on the species.

Ok thanks all. I've a piece of 1mm maple bent round a small metal bowl and four pieces of black dyed sycamore veneer ready to go. Do I use CA, wedge them in and flood it? I've sealed the top but really don't want the nasty yellow ca streaks! Titebond in the slot and then try to get all the pieces in? Any further advice appreciated.

Thanks.

I’ve had the best luck with a tight fit and flood with CA. I could never get the titebond swelling the material ratio worked out and it usually ended in cussing. With CA, pack it as tight as you can and flood it.

Correct on the shellac in the channel to prevent discoloring.

Ahhh! Thanks. I sealed the top before I routed the channels and didn't think to seal the channels. I'll do that thanks.

Yeah, definitely seal the channel. It won’t cause any issues with the CA and will prevent the discoloring. Good luck!

Definitely seal the channel if you are using CA; you want to prevent it from sucking into the endgrain and staining.
