Hello,

I recently sold my 16-32 drum sander with the intention of getting a wider unit. I'm looking at the 19-38 Supermax and the Jet 22-44. They are both on sale at the moment. I don't think I have the space for the 22-44, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm interested in the width (depth?) from the outside edge of the motor to the outside edge of the drum housing. The manual says 42" but I think that's the stand. Anyone have one of these and can tell me the measurement?

Second question - Same for the dimensions of the 19-38. :)

Last question - The 19-38 is wide enough to do dred tops that are not cut out yet, I would think, with leaving a ridge at the paper attachment point. A joined plate that is 18" in width for example. Has that been your experience?

Brad

Are you looking at the OSC? I've heard it's the bomb...

Unfortunately not. I cannot afford the footprint of the fixed base. I am planning to use the standard version which comes with an open stand but just put the stand aside and mount on top of a set of cabinets (hence the need to know the overall depth of the unit from motor to drum).

That OSC does look impressive though.

The guy at woodcraft said it had to be mounted to the closed base, but the manual says: "Make sure the sander is firmly secured to the stand or work table before use".

Ed, please stop spending my money for me. :D :D

I took a trip to Woodcraft. The 19-38 is 42" from table edge to outside edge of the motor. I'm just going to guess that the 22-44 is 3 inches more. :)

The 22-44 Oscillating Drum Sander is 43.5" from outer cover of motor to end of drum carriage. If looking at the 22-44 class of machines, the extra money spent on the ODS capability (about $600) puts the machine in a category by itself. The 22-44 ODS has some of the benefits of the next level of machines - the wide oscillating belt sanders - but at about 1/4 the price tag, can still be run on 20A 115V power (1-3/4 hp), and with better ability than wide belt sanders to handle really thin stock. We never change grits - 80 grit provides a surface that is about what is achieved with P150 on a ROS...no linear sanding scratches to scrape or sand out...we go direct to P220 ROS or hand sanding with the Festools or Dynabrades.

About the only annoyance with the 22-44 ODS was the lack of a mobile base for the sculpted base that Jet introduced with the tool in 2008. We created a mobile base for the sander with 3/4" ply screwed to the bottom of the existing stand and addition of a locking 200 lb/wheel industrial caster set. The newer version of the sander - not yet in the distribution pipeline - has a rectangular closed stand with built-in non-castering wheels, but for true mobility, a standard mobile base with locking, fully castored wheels would need to be added...we found our ply solution to be better and less expensive than add-on sets.

The new version of the machine is in line with Jet's redesign of all their drum sanders - tilt control for the bed versus head, redesigned controls, and larger cut-outs in the drum for abrasive changes. None of these changes are really all that useful, but for the fat-fingered, the larger paper change cut-outs might make the infrequent paper changes a bit easier.

I ended up going the cheap route and getting a 19-38. It’s about the biggest footprint I can squeeze in. The folding in/out feed tables are a nice touch. Makes this overall smaller width than my 16-32 when not in use.

I have the Supermax 19-38 and really like it. I bought it new directly from Supermax about seven years ago and haven't had any issues with almost daily use. I got the digital height gauge with it and SO glad I did.
