I was mitering some bindings today and thought I would share a jig I have been using for a long time. It can in some cases replace the polished chisel method.

The kerf of a Freud Diablo is 0.062. Cut a channel in a piece of wood with it to appropriate depth and put a 45 degree cut on one end. 0.060 Ivoroid, tortoise etc will fit snugly or wood binding thinned appropriately.

Using the miter gauge on your disk sander it is easy to put a perfect 45 on binding strips. Go slow with Ivoroid, it can catch on fire!!

Terrance- I think that many of us just do this with a little backsaw and shop made miter box. Those saws get dull and the miter box slots widen in time. It only took a couple of minutes to try your idea today. I can see that I'll have uses for it. Although not necessary, I ended up putting a strip of self adhesive 120 grit on the jig side facing the fence. That's fine enough that it is still slidable, but it gave me a little more control. Thanks!--Bob

Nice one Terence!
I just threw together this poor man's version the other day for my fretboard bindings.
P150 grit on the face of the fence to steady the workpiece, the LN 62 is optional.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
