I bought these wood from a Taiwanese supplier...

Image

To the left is a LONG (40 inches) piece of purpleheart turning blank, 3" x 3", will be sawn into laminates, while the extra length will probably become headplates/inlay pieces (cost is 25 dollars)

To the middle is same size of Taiwanese Acacia wood. Except it's a bit shorter (about 36"), I see a neck in the future for this one. As you know Acacia is in the same class as koa, so the wood looks kinda like koa, but I don't see any figuring at the moment. It looks close enough to mahogany that I might just put it on a mahogany bodied guitar. Cost is 15 dollars.

To the right is a piece of "Sapele". They call it sapele but it does not have the look/feel of sapele (they are denser than mahogany, and have that stripy grain). It looks a bit like African/honduran mahogany to me. I bought this as neck blank but I don't know because the size is 5.5" x 40" x 2", and I'm thinking maybe I should turn it into a side. I got plenty of other woods to make necks out of... That plank cost me 25 dollars.

Yeah, useful stuff wood.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I got a question though...

This sapele I got is rift sawn which I think is ok with sides..

But I bought a big piece of sapele (cost me 40 dollars total, same size but 8 inches wide) and it's completely FLAT sawn. I wanted to make it into a back but I'm not even sure if this is possible. Are flat sawn sapele even used for backs?

Sapele is a pretty stable wood. I would think flat sawn would work fine for backs.
