Post subject:  00 - New Off the Bench

Just wrapped this 00 this morning. Just enough time to take a few photos before the the happy owner picked it up. He's been helping out now and then with the build, so he's been anxious to get it in his hands. Wish I had more time to play it before it walked out the door. First impression playing it myself was really positive. Then sitting across from him as he worked through some finger-style blues, I was very pleased. I'll be interested to hear it in a month and more down the line. This is the second he's purchased from me, and his son has one too, so happy repeat customers.

I'll get some more photos up tomorrow when I have a chance to do some editing.

Quick stats:
Figured Maple back and sides
Sitka top
Mahogany neck
Macassar ebony fb, headstock overly, and bridge
Ivoroid binding
Waverly tuners

Really nice! I love the burst.
Is that a standard Martin double 0 shape?

Too quick on the Submit button.

Thanks for the comments, all. Brad. The plan is close to Grellier's plan, but I did change the waist and lower bout a little bit to round out the radius a little bit. Feels better to my eye. The image below shows the difference - Grellier in red, my outline in black.

Beauty! You nailed the burst!

As for build quality, finish and sound, this is easily my best effort to date. I'm especially happy with the burst. I've struggled with getting a nice even fade in the past. This time around I really focused on my gun settings and technique and it paid off. As usual, the photos really don't give it justice. Here's some more photos.

If I'm not mistaken this is the L-00 Gibson, not the Martin 00.

Steve. Correct. Gibson, not Martin. And now neither.

I agree with everyone about the sunburst. Really nicely done. I like the gradual transition a lot and also like the way you carried it up around the sound hole and a little into the upper bout.

Yep, the whole guitar looks real good, I like the way you did the burst.

Nice looking guitar! Great effort!

Post subject:  Re: 00 - New Off the Bench

Again, thanks all! I'm generally not a fan of bursts. They tend to be too dark at the edges and in the upper bout, in fact completely opaque in most cases. So I didn't want that. The photos don't show it, but it is still a bit translucent, even in the darkest areas. So the grain is visible. And I was able to keep the finish thin, even in the dark areas, so all goals met.

I have to say I'm not usually a sunburst fan, but yours looks fantastic. Beautiful work!

That is an impressive looking guitar. I used to do a bunch of finish work and sunbursts, it is a tough thing to do well and I think you nailed it! I haven't done a burst in so long, I am envious of how well you did here, and now I'm motivated to do one soon!

Great work! Keep it up.

Lovely work, and contrary to most on this thread, I LOVE a beautiful burst. And that one there is lovely.

I love the Gibson 00 shape and this is a fantastic variation on it.

The sunburst looks fantastic too, I really want to hear this beaut!

Really like the burst on this one and was glad to see that you include a pic of the back. Classic wood for an L00 and the slight fade on the neck looks good too.
What prompted the slight narrowing of the waist and lower bout? ( If I'm looking at that correctly )
I have 2 that are almost ready for finish and used the Char plans from GAL. Wonder how close the 2 plans are
