Anyone here ever play a '59 les paul?

I had one for close to 30 years before I sold it. By 2000 I'd decided no guitar was worth that much money. I got myself a real nice 2000 R8 (loved the bigger neck) that had an acoustic ring close to that of my '59, then went about trying loads of pickups to get a set that sounded like clones of the old bugger... and never looked back. Those Rs are great guitars and my R8 sounds very much like my real 59 did, much more so than the original ‘58 and '60 I got to try ever did. So there you go.

Did you ever try Throbak pups? We've installed them for clients and they are the closest thing to an original PAF I've ever heard. So much so that I'm likely going to become a dealer and put them on two of my personal guitars.

No, they weren't available (not to me anyway) when I got the R8 in 2000. What’ve have in it now is reeaal close to the pickups that lived in my 59. Closer than those vintage 58 and 60 I have tried anyway. So...

Now that's a can of worms opened. I have to ask, have you played his Dumble too?

Nope just his burst and 50's gold top. He spent an afternoon with Dave and I. We locked the doors and didn't answer the phone when he was here and had a great time.

Great guy and a fantastic player.

There's a pic of him with Dave (I took the pic) on our business homepage. http://www.annarborguitars.com/index.html?PHPSESSID=7246b4bbc85f3e5c601fd65ba048f7a8

If that guitar ever walked through my door for a setup, I’d have to make a call to my insurance guy and add the cost of the temporary extra coverage. My policy doesn’t come close to covering that.

Haha, now I understand why you left the corporate world behind.

That Gold Top's got even more mojo! When I think of Robben Ford, it's that guitar, (or the blond tele, or the riviera...)

ps. I know mojo's not a real thing.
