Post subject:  Baritone string spacing

I’m building a baritone, and wondering if I should go to a 1 13/16 nut as opposed to a 1 3/4 to accommodate the thicker strings.

Any thoughts/experience?

Thanks in advance

Steve

I'd stick with 1 3/4 inch. That's wide enough. Lotta players might complain about the extra width.

Steve-

I have only built one baritone, so take this for what it is, but I did not make the neck any bigger at the nut than I would a normal scale guitar. Mine turned out fine. I imagine the space between the strings is big enough to accommodate a bit of extra string width without the spaces feeling too narrow.

Hi Steve,

FWIW, my baritones use a 1-13/16” nut and I find it feels very natural likely due to the increased string gauges. My personal daily driver is a 27” scale, is tuned to C, and I use a custom string set consisting of .060”, .052”, .042”, .029”, .019”, .015”.

Looking forward to pictures!

Best, M

Pretty sure mine have been 1 13/16 too...

Okay, wider spacing wins.

From Linda Manzer.

“Definitely wider spacing because the strings are big!”

Thanks again

1 13/16 x 2 5/16.
