A simple but very useful little tool. Dave Collins of Ann Arbor Guitars made this one, I got it when I went to their setup class about 5 years ago. It's made of 0.040" brass stock, the handle portion is folded over and soldered. The graduations on the ruler are 1/8" squares.

Photos came out corrupted, I'll repost them. Think I got it all fixed, holler if you have any questions.

The 3/4" portion for lifting the string is a single layer of 0.040" brass. The handle portion is doubled over and soldered.

I was gonna do the setup class, paid my $300 deposit and no one else signed up. Musta seen who they’d be spending the weekend with - idunno

I’m pretty sure I got the idea for mine off of the Ann Arbor website. This thing is such a time saver when cutting nut slots.

Pulling the string out of a nut slot.

Are you guys just pulling straight up with these things or leveraging the string out somehow? I have the little stewmac one that sort of leverages the string out, but is only so-so.

We pull pretty much straight up. If you leave it in your less dominant hand and file with the dominant hand you can rest your hand with the lifter in it on the nut and kind of sort of roll... your hand on it's side as you lift giving you a bit of leverage. That's what I do.

Hey Pat, I had one of those Stew Mac string lifters too and I agree, it's just so-so. The Collins lifter works really well.
