In my book that one is toast. I would not take that one in simply becasue it's not worth the cost of the repair. Even at $100 dollars you may as well get a new guitar. It looks like it broke right through the grain at about 90deg from the fretbaord. A side pic would help.

Having said that on a couple occasions for repairs like that I send the owner home with a bit of advice, go ahead and slather some epoxy in there and see what happens. To my surprise a guitar like that has held together for many years. But I don't see anything wrong with a cheap fix on a cheap guitar. If you can get it playing again then it might make some kid happy who might one day turn into the next Michael Hedges.

The other thought is don't give it to a luthier but give it to some kid who wants to learn how to build and repair. There are student guitars for guitarist right? Well there are student guitars for young budding luthiers too.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! Upon my advice, I’m pretty sure they are going to either 1) inquire with Taylor to see if they can buy a new neck or 2) get an estimate from a repair shop. I’ll let them make their own judgement as to the value prospect. Hopefully this won’t come back to me.
