I did a little body work on a vehicle today. Parts store sold me fas acting bondo. 25 minutes from application to sanding.
Has anyone tried this for pore fill yet?
I will be running some tests to see how it works and holds up.

This is a joke right? If so Padma would be proud. In any case I would avoid the pink.

It would impact the tone and the thing would sound like a 57 Chevy That's not a bad tone at all BTW.

My read back then in "DP" times "during Padma" on the OLF was that Padma wanted us to be more open minded about what you could use for pore filler. When I was the first moderator (and maybe the last) that the OLF ever had Padma once suggested that certain bodily fluids make great pore filler. I remember it well because it was the only time I ever considered editing or deleting a post. Lance's marching orders where that he wanted his seven year old to be able to read the forum.

Anyway sure Bondo why not and Padma IIRC had used it before and was not just suggesting it. He painted too so he likely dyed it Dave as you have suggested. Seems to me that it would be no more harmful than epoxy which is what I always used.

Lastly one of the Dan Erlewine books on finishing guitars shows Dan using Bondo to smooth out electric bodies.

Test it on scrap, all the way to applying finish. See how "pretty" it is.

I’m not trying to be heretical here. The perfect pore fill is an oxymoron as we all know.
This stuff is nasty smelling so it does have a down side. But a pore fill that is ready for sanding in 25 minutes might be just the ticket.

Mohawk makes a wood colored (oak) bondo that I have used for furniture repair. It can be colored with pigment stains and probably the ultra penetrating stains (which being alcohol based might also thin it). I've never used it as a grain filler, but it should work as well as any other Bondo product, and starting out as a "wood color" might have some advantages. I used the white colored hardener with it rather than the red.

Minwax may offer a similar product (I've never used it) which may be more available.It doesn't have quite the wood color, but if you are coloring it anyway that might not matter.

My father had a used car lot, and I occasionally did some body work for him (minor stuff). Bondo was good for small fills and as long as you have impermeable material behind it (metal, fiberglass, etc.) and paint on top of it so moisture can't be absorbed it can make a lasting repair. If water can get to it it will bubble and the paint will craze and crack.

I have used bondo to repair a semi-rotting window trim. 10 years on and it's still just fine; but with paint over the top and not laquer.

A better choice for guitars is drywall mud. Tints easily, sands easily, goes in those pores easily. Dries in 30 minutes, ready for sanding and the next application (takes 3 times).

I have a vague recollection the above product was discussed before.

I have used this and find it is pretty much the same as the drywall mud.

I think there are people using drywall compound too. I don't see why Bondo would not work but there are better alternatives, as mentioned bondo stinks pretty bad. On the current two I am building I am trying Aqua Coat for the first time it's pretty darn good stuff if ya ask me.

That water putty is gypsum based so it might not work so well with water based finsihes?

One the one guitar I've built so far I had success using sawdust and shellac to do a pseudo pore fill. The neck came out prerrt smooth and nobody really noticed anything off with it.

I keep seeing the name Padma pop up. But I can't ever get the nerve up to read those old posts. Might be for the better lol

Are you sanding back to wood with aqua coat?

I use Aqua Coat and yes, I sand back to the wood.

Yes I do sand back to wood too. It really is good stuff. Dries to be sanded in like 45 minutes.

There is Bondo and there is spot filler. Bondo is 2 parts you mix. Hard to sand. Spot puddy comes in a tube you just wipe on. Easy to sand and is similar to drywall joint compound.
