I know that Lance has had a very hard week and more trying to get our ancient forum back up and working and before anything else is said I want to extend the most sincere thanks for your efforts to Lance for all of his work in getting the OLF back on line.

Thank You Lance!!! [:Y:]

Wow. That almost jumped on the screen. Now can I sign in on my Mac, or iPad? Without messing up the Kindle that actually gets signed in?

It's good to see the OLF back online. I agree with Ken. The site and individual pages load much faster than they used to. Cool.

Thanks everyone.
I wont want to do this again anytime soon. What a frustrating mind bending time suck.
I am glad we are here, hopefully we can make this our forever home.
I will be making a plea for more Patreon supporters as I feel that a subscription model will be more economy proof.
Maybe with a group of Patreons and our few sponsors we can get back to the forum covering its costs.

You STILL haven't mentioned how many ducats per month this new place is costing.

Chris,
Do you tell your customers how much that you charge is your profit?

Chris is running a for-profit business. Everything Lance has said about the OLF has implied he is not trying to run a profit-making business. He has framed the need for donations in terms of keeping the site operating and he has periodically offered wood sets for sale to keep the forum open. This has always given me the impression that the OLF is something of a community effort as opposed to a business. Maybe I've been wrong about that. Maybe he actually is trying to make it money making venture and that's why he has not answered the many questions about how much it takes to keep the lights on. Nothing wrong in principle with that, but it would be nice to know which it is.

That’s Lance’s business and he owes none us no answer to it. If he wants the headache of keeping this thing going or simply shutting it down…..that too is his business.

Wassup with Gasawdust, are we a Lance Fanboy? lol lance definitely owes us an answer as he keeps asking for $ without any details and or explanation. This Forum is dying on the vine anyways.

Considering I’ve been able to access the site and archives on his dime, I feel like it’s me who owes Lance. I think the fact that he put it on a card is sobering, and I don’t really have a reasonable basis to think he’s trying to run with my money here. I agree that it would be helpful to know how much a monthly pledge should be to be helpful, but absent that, Patreon memberships tend to be tiered in the $5-20 range depending on who the content creator is—with most being around $10. That’s what I’m pledging for now.

Over the past few years, I've contributed to a few kickstarter campaigns by local bands I like who were looking to cover the costs of recording a new album. They always give a dollar amount goal for the total projected cost they need to cover. Knowing that amount, which has been anywhere from $15,000 to $43,500, informed how much I contributed to the cause. For me, the same thinking applies to contributing to the cause for the OLF. Simple as that.

What makes you think I turn a profit?

Chris Pile- It’s just an assumption, please excuse me if I’m wrong.

dofthesea- Thank you but at 76 y.o. I’m hardly a boy, I don’t know Lance personally but have been on this board since about since its launch date. I’ve seen it when it was vibrant and when it’s been weak. To say it’s dying on the vine shows your true colors.

I totally agree. It would be great to have a suggested amount and a ballpark monthly goal. I wish the forum were more actively managed, but I'm grateful it's still here for my benefit, I appreciate whatever effort Lance has gone to to enable that, and I'm comfortable going with $10.

Post subject:  Re: Many Thanks Lance

I'm going to go with $10 through Patreon too that seems fair to me and I would like to enjoy the place.

So how about the folks who have questions for Lance take them to Lance directly with a PM? If you find that the forum under how it's run is not something that you consider to be providing you with the value you prefer don't contribute. No one is moving to make this a member only forum you are still welcome but there is a time to get back to discussing guitars.

If those with issues contributing simply don't contribute and those with issues and no issues who want to contribute simply do contribute everyone gets what they want. I couched my choices here as some of us still will have issues, I do but we will contribute anyway.

I'll add our shop is in the Looth Group which is an excellent resource with a live component that some may enjoy. The organizers did a superb job putting it together and it fills a need that has never been historically addressed. Solitary luthiers endlessly toiling with sharp chisel in hand by candle light were always alone with no one to speak with. The Looth Group has changed that and that's a pretty cool thing.

I looked at their forum as a hedge against some here trying and succeeding in taking down the OLF maybe.... and I would suggest that others take a look too. The forums there are not the same as here and the participation level was less than I anticipated. Most of you are most interested in building and I did not see a lot of content being generated for aspiring builders. The forum there is also nicely divided into many, many categories that some may find dilutes and masks the true activity level.

Most of all the Looth Group is a great achievement and my hats off to the men women who make it work! Bravo!!

Moving on which is what I would like to see us do as well.

Most of all it's back on line, the forum that is and I'm glad for that and Lance did do a LOT of very hard work to get it back on line including a lot of struggling as well.

My hope is that we are all decent and respectful to and with each other. If you can't do that perhaps this forum is not for you? This is also the first time in over 40,000 OLF posts that I have ever suggested that some folks may be happier elsewhere..... Whatever the situation is grievances have been voiced, Lance is aware of all of this and if he continues to not reply to folks consider that he may not wish to and factor that into your decision to leave or stay.

I'm staying and just like when I had to stay after school in 6th grade on the last day of school for acting out... I'm going to remain here helping where I can because I will always be grateful to the OLF, its members past and present (most of them...) and Lance. Your mileage may vary and that's OK but please don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Thanks
