I hope some of you can show us some of your necks that you've constructed. Woods used, laminations, art etc. Wanting some ideas for a new neck construction. If your laminating them, are you profiling then glueing or just blocking them up, glueing , then rough cutting your profile?? Anyway, how about showing some of us beginners? Thanks, Dave |

Dave, check www.hoffmanguitars.com, he really lays it out there for you. He is good buds with James Olson, so I'm sure they are similarly done. I have a few pics of a neck somewhere I'll find a link. Good luck to you in your search. |

Here are a couple of pics of one of my necks, very similar to many laminated necks out there.
And here's another with a back veneer on it.

Could I purchase tracings of different pegneads. I do not intend to copy bt I would like a starting point for the proportions-or do you know of full sixe examples on web? Thanks It seems that volutes are mainly for show? (I noticed that LMI (or Stu/Mac) sells near final finish 12 and 14 fret necks with or without volutes (someone must believe that volute is not a necessary component The reason for my intrest is, if in fact V not necessary but if included will make it posible for unusual, artistic, etc. interp. of volute? |

I put the veneer on after the neck and volute are totally shaped/carved. Make a clamping caul that's roughly the same shape as the back of your headstock (including volute curve), and then put a piece of foam, or a dense sponge, or something similar in between that caul and the veneer when you clamp it on there. Helps to have a thin veneer too! After the glue dries, trim the veneer to rough shape with scissors and sand flush. |

You can also vacuum bag the veneer on as well. You will still need to have it shaped properly, and tape it in place. |
