Gibson SG with a twist, repair advice..

A customer called and wants me to install a new jack in his 86 SG. The twist is that he says the jack is in the side of the guitar not on the face. I have never seen a SG that didn't have the jack on the face. I need to know what part to order from my local Gibson dealer and since I haven't seen the guitar I don't know what the jack looks like. The local Gibson dealer is our small town shop and the guy there has never seen an SG with a side jack either.


I am going to try and get my hands on the guitar so I can figure this out but I thought I would check in here. Any of you ever seen a SG with the jack on the side. Better yet does anyone have a pictures?


If any of you repair guys have some insight into this I would really appreciate it.

Hi Josh, you need a long threaded barrell type jack from Allparts. It is EP_0151-000. The link is

I would try and talk him out of it though. I have seen SG's with this and it just isn't right. It will affect the future resale value of the instrument. Has he thought of a right angle plug?

Apparently there was an SG-Z guitar produced in 97-8 which featured a side jack as well.

Evan, apparently the guitar already has this type of jack and from what he told me Gibson made it that way. He also wanted it to be a genuine Gibson part.


John, interesting guitar. This guitar is an 86.


Thanks for your help guys. I think i will have to wait until I can see the guitar and then I will go from there.

Was the side jack done later?
Usually the recesses have finish sprayed in them (routing and drilling are done before sanding and finish).
It also looks like you have the '5 holes in the face' like a regular SG there. I can't tell from the pic if there was a re-wire done at some point.

As far as I know its all original apart from having been refretted at least twice and having a healthy amount of dings and buckle rash ( I bought her about 17 years ago second hand ).

Hey those pictures are terrific! Thanks for taking the time to post them. I'd never heard of or seen an SG like this until I got the call from the customer. Now I've got a good idea of what I'm dealing with and lots to go on. Thanks guys
