Mario and Brad - thanks for the replies -

I do realize that bolt-on necks are acceptable, but the butt joint with no tenon is news to me. That's the part that threw me...

Mario, if you have a butt joint, where is the dowel going?

In the heel... full length, fully glued(whatever's on hand will be more tha strong enough) and yes, orient the grain 'sideways'
