I just cut a few sets of this Chechen wood - fairly inexpensive and the wood has some very interesting figure. Just wondering if anyone has used this for backs/sides before? It cuts easier than cocobolo but the dust really makes me sneeze!

I believe it's grown in mexico and south america.. several of the woodworking supply shops carry it. |

They are different. I also have a set of the grenadillo from LMI - this wood is definitely more of a chocolate color. I'd describe the grenadillo more as brick red. |

I've used it on a few projects, but am still on my first guitar. You're right, it does come from South America. It's beautiful and very heavy. I haven't seen it quarter sawn. Is that quartered sawn? Clinton |

Chechen, Metopium brownei. From Central America. This is a very good tonewood and is easy to work with. The trees do not get very large, so finding fully quartersawn backs is difficult. It is hard and dense With a radial shrinkage of 4% and a tangential shrinkage of 6%. Some have compared this favorably to Brazilian rosewood. Grant |

I am not sure of the pronounciation but I purchased this wood on ebay from one of the larger wood dealers... under $10/bf. My local wood dealer carries it as well but rarely in widths over 4". As Grant said it seems to work fairly easy and is hard but not too heavy. It has a really nice chatoyance when wet. I am just surprised this wood hasn't been used considering it's beauty and potential as a tonewood! |

Lol aside, it sure is pretty when wet and will probably be sought more. Paddy stay quiet now, you didn't see this, it's only a figment of yer imagination...
