This is cool enough that I thought I would share. As some of you may know, I am building a L-OO style guitar of native Michigan woods. My customer also wanted Petoskey stone for the rosette and fingerboard inlays if we could make it work. I got some sliced Petoskey stone from a guy in Boyne City and ran it through my CNC to get the slices down to a consistent 60 thou. I then had the CNC cut out 8 segments that I could assemble into a finished rosette.

For those of you who have never heard of Petoskey stone, it is fossilized coral found near Petoskey, presumably along the shores of Lake Michigan. It is essentially limestone, so it is fairly soft and cuts easily.

The stone hasn't been polished, but in the pictures of the rosette ring, I spritzed the stone with water.

Ken: We are also inlaying Petoskey stone ovals in the fingerboard! I had hoped to get the rosette in your pine top sometime this week, but this week and the next couple are pretty hectic, so my time in the shop will be extremely limited.

Is that stone always blue and where could one procure some should they desire to use it for a rosette? I like it.

James, I have never actually found a stone (granted I had never looked for one either), but I have seen polished Petoskey stones for sale in every little shop up north! Tony, the stones range from brownish black to the bluish gray shown above. The cool ones are dark with really light rings, but I didn't want to use dark stone in this rosette. I am going to burst the top, and I wanted some contrast. Easy to locate the stones, harder to find someone to saw one up. Took several calls to find the guy that helped me out. Even then, the stone was cut way too thick to use for a rosette, so I had to level and thickness it before I could cut out the rosette segments.
