Hope its not bad form to resurrect an older thread. What is the general idea about pore filling or sealing on the top? Every tutorial I have seen shows it being done on the back, and I think its implied that you don't do the top, but I have yet to see it explicitly mentioned one way or the other.

Thoughts?

Hesh - Excellent toot! Thanks!!
And I've experienced the challenges of System III - loooooooong time to harden - must have gotten the proportion a bit off. I'll try Zpoxy next time.

Hesh - I want to thank you for this toot. I just finished my first use of zpoxy and it went really well thanks to your guidance here. Tod Stock's videos on youtube were also a big help. Other than the fumes, this stuff is a huge improvement over the LMI acrylic paste filler I've used up to now. I never felt like I got complete pore filling using that and it seemed like there was some shrink back after the finish was on. PITA to sand too. On the guitar I just applied the zpoxy on, there is no sign whatsoever of pores now. Completely flat surfaces everywhere. If there is no shrink back later, this finish should look particularly nice. It sands easy and it also scrapes really well with a razor blade. I also love how it brings out the grain. Very cool.

Thanks J, much appreciated AND the guitar looks absolutely superb in all respects - wow!!! Be sure to post more pics of her when you are ready, please?

Learning the epoxy pore fill from Mike Doolin's toots on LMI likely saved me from quitting building.... Seriously I could not make pore filling work for me with any of the choices out here including all of the solutions... sold by the Lutherie supply houses.

Once I tried epoxy my level fills stayed that way and as you pointed out it sure pops the figure on the wood too.

PS: Sorry to be pedantic but epoxy can be a sensitizer for some and our friend Kim in OZ even got pretty sick, very sick from it back in the day so nitrile gloves, lots of ventilation, be safe. Thanks.
