ok i bought 8 lbs of essex 43awg magnet wire with red enamel. This will work for pickups right? Is $63 bucks a good deal for 8lbs of that? let me know. thanks

I haven't made any pickups and don't have any particular knowledge
to share with you.

Jason Lollar wrote a book on how to do pickup winding, but it seems
to be out of print and unavailable.

LMI (lmii.com) sells a book called "Animal Magnetism for Musicians"
that is supposed to contain pickup winding info, but I haven't
seen it.

I suspect 6# of wire is enough for a *lot* of pickups!

Well...at approximately 50,000 feet per lb, you have 300,000 ft of wire...
When I have played in the past, I used 42 gage wire, and ended up anywhere between 7,000 and 9,000 turns depending on the DC resistance that I was looking for. Making an over-compensated approximation that 1 turn is one wrap, you will be able to wrap an easy 30 bobbins...but this number could probably go plus or minus 10 depending on what you are turning for (hot fat single coils, humbuckers, etc...)

That sounds like a good deal.

The neck pickup on a Tele uses 43 awg.

Strats, Tele bridge, and Gibson Humbuckers use 42 awg.

Rickenbackers use 44 awg.

You should be fine. You might want to keep in mind that it's the number of winds that matters, the dc resistance is just used by some as a rough estimate for wrap count.

i was planning on reselling a pound or two of the wire on ebay so that I can make my money back. I'm sure i have enough for all the pickups i ever wanna make. i may also get some 42 in the future, we'll see.

whats your opinions of cutting up old nails for the metal rods to attach to the magnets? I figured theyre magnetic it should work. But maybe no? ill test it out anyways.
