I have just stripped the finish off this clone Strat. I used a heat gun and a scraper. The timber underneath is not brilliant and I can see the joins and in the horns is very rough. I also damaged the timber in a few spots.

I have nitro grey primer to be followed by Lake Placid Blue and clear gloss.

Question: should I use a grain filler/ sanding sealer to smooth before primer or can I use the primer and colour and a bit of wet and dry between?

Also, what grit? 400? 800? 1200?

What type of wood will determine if it needs a grain filler. FWIW I do not use any colored primers under my color coats, neither did fender. This just adds to the film thickness of the nitro which can encourage checking. I do use a sealer though, one that is matched to the finish I will be using.

Plain old alder is my guess.

And that means grain filler?

Yep looks like Alder which is typically tight grained enough that a pore fill is not needed.

Ty. It plays very well. Great action. The "Boston Blues" Texas wound pups sound great. The bridge is very heavy solid brass with gold finish. Great sustain. Three springs on the trem was plenty.

Like my headstock logo?

Nice job.

Did you make the Taylor logo on the headstock? When I first saw it, I was curiously wondering if the guitar was an early Taylor Electric ( Taylor being the famous Acoustic Manufacture).

I did make the logo. It's my surname.
