As the title implies, I would like to know if anyone has used fretwire for ornamental purposes. I've never seen examples of it, but surely I can't be the only one who's thought of it?

We inherited some real crap fret wire but you know what they say about when you have lemons....

Dave Collins made this model of a 30's L-OO out of the stuff using his new soldering iron. It graces the top of our stairs along with Jimi when you enter our shop.

So, not what I had in mind, but that is impressive.

I was thinking more along the lines of accents on a headstock or a solid body.

Are the days in Ann Arbor magically 28 hours long? How the heck would anyone have time on the side for something so tedious and involved ON TOP of the tedious and involved building and playing of guitars!

Can't remember the brand but we bought Dave a new high-end soldering station, you know the $1,000 type and he loved using it so much he couldn't stop soldering for about three days...... :D Seriously! So we had two pre-war 30's L-OOs in the shop at the same time, different owners and Dave saw that as an opportunity to model them accurately in crappy fret wire.

We get lots of comments on it and Dave had a great time doing it. Of course with all the lead fumes that I inhaled I'm now sterile but that's just another side benefit of being a Luthier. ;)

The secret is bringing a six pack to lounge around the shop after hours instead of going to the bar. This formed over a few months of occasional evening tinkering, but everyone needs a hobby. :)

This never produced any usable arts or crafts for me but I've decided to keep trying anyway. ;)
