Finished my V build.
Maple, Padauk, and Ebony.
I went with the Schaller 3D bridge which allows varying the string spread.
The neck width at the bridge is wider than normal. Fits my fingers well.
Both fins are hollow, total weight is 6 pounds.
Grover tuners, Emg 81 pickup.
25.3" scale, 14" radius.
I made a mistake putting the jack on the inside of the lower fin: I'll need to get a right angle jack to play it sitting down.
Finish is wiped-on poly, no grain fill.

Looks very nice. Good choice on the bridge, too.

Nice one, Dan! The finish looks really nice without the grain fill!

I don't know electrics, but that is -very- elegant!

it would appear as if you made the wings hollow by basically making the sides of the axe similar to ribs on an acoustic, then added in a cap and back, and viola'!

those guitars, along with the Kelly, are notorious for neck diving...e.g. by reducing the weight of the body you're most likely going to have that issue in spades...

I noticed that tendency on my '84 RR custom...eventually I figured out that if I wrapped the strap around the face of the guitar on the wing it solved the problem.

'nice' solution to the issue of having to put 2 angles on the neck blank...e.g. you left the body in the same plane as the neck and recessed the bridge to make it workable...the biggest hurdle I see to making a neck through with a TOM or floating FLoyd Rose is just how the he!! do you deal with the fretboard extension...the only real solution (I don't consider slipping a wedge underneath to be 'real') I can think of is to use an overhead router with a very short pattern bit to not only level the top but also pattern around the fretboard leaving wood underneath the extension (or something very similar to that concept if you deal with 'elevations' on the blank before you glue the wings on...

either way, nice looking axe
