One thing you learn in practicing spraying is to stare intently at the finish right where you are laying it down. Good lighting is essential. If it is not working right you must react decisively and quickly.

I spray right in front of my garage with no problems down into the fifties. The cars are far away and I sweep where I will be walking. It is not like enamel where dust will stick for a half hour.

The microscopic flakes of the metallic powder will lay down by gravity during the time when they are on the guitar and the lacquer is still fluid. So the scientific reason why metallics are hard to spray without getting stripes is that your spray technique has to be consistent. You want to keep overlapping the same amount each time around. You don't want to stop anywhere, no breaks until the whole surface is evenly coated.
