All Ive ever used is the stamped and have been ok with them . This is a great question . I look forward to someone answering this who has expperience with both.

I see both stamped (lighter) as well as cast (heavier) tailpieces offered. What experience do builders have with each and why would one choose one over the other? TIA |

I bet I've tried every T/P out there, and the only one that works for me is the James. It is an outstanding T/P and used by most quality builders. Course Bill is a good friend...

Guys, just go to http://www.axinc.net. That will put you right on Bill's website. JJ, the tin canny that Gibson used all those years is too ringy for my taste, and if you lace something to isolate the strings, you have the same as the James. Charlie Derrington tried to get Bill to lighten them up. but solid mechanical whiz that Bill is, he knows when to say no. The tailpieces isolate themselves by using O rings to both lock the rear hinged cover and keep the strings from rattling. The strings hold the O rings in place. |

Another vote for the James tailpiece, they are great! However, for mandolin styles beside Gibson type arch tops, you might find other types more appropriate. Check out the selection at Greg Boyd, for example http://gregboyd.com/accessories.html?category_key=5&family=Mandolins |

Does anyone make their own tailpieces? Ive seen some very clunky home made ones and prefer something a bit slimmer. |

Weber offers an unmarked universal tailpiece thats fits standard screw hole placement. It a nice bridge. |

I've always hankered after something along the lines of the elegant tailpiece developed by archtop builder Bob Benedetto, but have stalled when it's come to working out an effective method of anchoring the loop end mandolin strings. Attachment: benedetto1.jpg Attachment: benedetto2.jpg Any ideas? |
