Small steps .. Guitars are much more involved than the mando , same basics but require more time and patience .. From the look of your work , I would say you can do it , just understand going in that its more involved and a bit more difficult . Remember one thing , There are NO DUMB QUESTIONS ... Feel free to ask for advice anytime . And use the search option . You will find that everyone here will be glad to give you good advice . |

Quote: Guitars are much more involved than the mando That may be true for a flattop mandolin, but try making an F5! A guitar takes me about the same amount of time as a carved top A type mandolin. However, for a 13yo that is a pretty darn good effort. Well done. |

Very nice job! Good to see another starting young. Good move starting with a kit, I sort of wish I had done the same. I tried a scratch electric as my first build when I was 13. I think it now lives in a dark corner of the attic. That mando, on the other hand, certainly has no reason to hide! |

Oh ya, very fun to build. It was good just to get away from the stress and things of life and just go build. It was really good experience in instrument making, I carved the neck, put in frets, made a nut and inlayed! So it was awesome, and I'm still trying to figure out what my next should be? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

yep! Go for it, you learn more with each build. Research the forums and you'll find everything from kits to guys who build great ukes with firewood piles. Local woods work, or if you have the excess cash laying around there is no end to what you can play with. Make sawdust carefully, and enjoy! |

thanks, I found a kit I like on stewmac (its a tenor uke) and I think ill go with that. Since there kits are fairly basic there's room or me to add something. I was thinking of binding it with rope purfling which is said to be used as uke binding so ill try that . And ill keep looking and maybe find something else to make it my own.cameron |

Keep us posted on the uke! Can't wait to see it. As for scratch building, it sure is gratifying but requires some tools and skills that you will have to work out. If you are processing your wood from lumber, you will need to be able to resaw it. Then you will need to learn to thickness your stock (even if you buy resawn sets you will have to thickness them). Also, you will need to learn to bend sides (if you haven't already). I'm not saying this to discourage you from doing it. Just start thinking about how you would accomplish these things as you are doing the kit. Have fun! |
