Post subject:  Uke Mortise and Tenon

Hello,

I'm in the process of building a tenor uke based on the plan from Georgia Luthier Supply here: http://ultimate-guitar-online.ultimate- ... cts_id=213

Regarding the mortise and tenon, I have built the neck angle jig that Robert O'Brien covers here for building guitars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJLfkh3GgFU

I'm using the templates from LMI here: http://www.lmii.com/products/tools-serv ... -templates

Questions:

1) I'm thinking I can make a template for the tenon side that would work for the size of the tenon called out in the plan. I also think I can just use a larger guide bushing on the guitar mortise template and have it match or be close to my custom tenon template. Do you folks use this type if jig for uke building or is there a more simple way?

2) Do I pretty much follow the same method as I use for guitar to set the neck angle on the uke?

Thanks!
Brad

I use a single bolt butt joint on a ukulele. Also my ukulele have no angle for the neck, makes life easyas I make a flat top. Your plan for the mortise and tenon should be fine.

The saddle height on my tenors is 10 or 11 mm. This about 4 mm lower than my SS guitars. Also the action is a little higher on a nylon string ukulele. For these reasons I do not need the back neck angle.

Some use a forward angle like a classical guitar. I do not but my fret board is 2mm thinner than a typical classical fret board. All in all I get the right saddle height and the right action with no angle.

I also use an sbbj and do my angle pretty much like a guitar.

What do you guys like to use for the bolt? I've seen the type that is wood screw on one end and threaded rod on the other. Also the wood insert type that is wood threads on the outside and a threaded receiver on the inside. Something like that?

I had my templates custom made for me, using a 1/2" pattern bit on a smaller version of Robbie's jig. Its described in detail in the Lounge on the Underground in my "Out of the box" thread.

Even with the 1/2" tenon, I use two 1/4x20 threaded inserts a la LMI.

I have used a dress bolt (home despot) to a tee-nut inside with a butt-joint and it works for me.
I pull emery tape through the joint to improve the fit.
