So number #6 is for a buddy who wanted me to build him a guitar, basically for cost of materials. Specs: Modified OM with abalone Japanese Maple-vine inlay, Curly Walnut back and sides, Lutz Spruce top, Honduras Mahogany neck, Curly Maple binding, Ebony saddle, fretboard and headstock, Black Buffalo Horn nut and bridge, Gotoh 510 tuners and a groovy LR Baggs Lyric pickup. --- Delivery day and a happy customer! Sad to see this girl leave the shop. Will post video soon.

Nice!
That's quite a bit of "bling" for materials...

Here's a little video recorded 48 hours post string-up taken on my iPad. Elixir ultra-light strings. The new owner is the player.

Whole bunch of nice going on with that guitar, Doug! Easy to see (and hear) why your friend has such a big smile on his face!

Very nice Doug, sounds lovely too. What did you use to finish? Also, how did you cut that japanese maple sound hole - I haven't even attempted an oval yet!

Cheers,
Murray

Thanks Murray. To answer your questions...

Finish schedule - epoxy fill (3x), lacquer sealer, 5 coats Mohawk nitro Instrument Lacquer, level sand to 600, 5 more coats, cure for three weeks, wet sand 600 through to 1200, buff with Menzerna medium and fine, apply swirl remover then light auto wax.

Soundport execution: the fingerboard inlay, purchased through Andy DePaule, comes with a printable file from which to work from. I just picked one of the Japanese Maple inlays, cut it out of a print out, glued it in place with CA glue, drilled most of the space out using a few diameters of drill bits and then used needle files and strips of sandpaper to clean the rest of it up. Of course the sound port is backed up by a cut off of the same side material but oriented with the grain running perpendicular to the sides for strength.Image
