Now that my uke's nearly done, it's time for the next project. This time it's a violin for my mum. I'm making it out of cinammon again and spruce.
I got the first parts cut out today.

Thanks! Graduations? Do you mean the carving thicknesses? No, I'm sort of making it up as I go along. I'll probably just make it a bit thinner than a maple equivalent as it's heavier. Tbh the whole thing is a total experiment - I've never made a violin before, so as long as it sounds vaguely like one in the end, I'll be happy! Good Luck, Peter. Looking forward to some progress. Violins are one of the most ancient of instruments and quite simple in concept. I'm sure yours will sound unique and fine. |

I am not familiar with cinnamon as a hard wood. Is it the same as cumaru? Cinnamon for spice comes from new shoots from small plants. Matt |

Thanks Joe. I have no idea tbh! It was given to me as 'canella' which is Spanish for cinnamon, and it smells extremely strongly of cinnamon, so I just assumed it was cinnamon wood. Not much progress to report just yet. I've got all the parts now - spruce top and ebony fingerboard. I cheated a bit and bought a pre-carved one. I'll make my own next time! Now just waiting on all the parts for my new bending iron to arrive from China. |

Cinnamon spice comes from bark of young trees (not shoots from small plants) of various species in the genus Cinnamomum (camphor is also in this genus). Canella winterana is a tree from the Caribbean and also occurs in Florida. There is only one species identified in this genus, and it is in a different family from cinnamon. The wood is very dense and hard, and commonly used for woodworking. Usually goes by the common name "Canella". Sounds like what you've got. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
