Glue up on neck and head stock . The neck blank is 1" thick and with the dry fit the fret board is .030 above the bridge now so I have room to move down . I am at a 1 degree slope on the neck . I will probably takke 1/8" off the neck bottom and then glue up before carving . That should allow me room to fit the bridge to the top and fret etc.

I do have one question that I would like help on ... Notice that the bridge is closer to the back of the body and leans back a little . I wondered if I could cut off first fret , change 12th fret and bridge accordingly and have a working shorter scale . Sounds to easy, so my gut says no, that the fret spacing wouldnt be correct anymore .

Comments please !!!

It's starting to look real cool [:Y:]

I don't know why you couldn't cut off the 1st fret - nothing new there as long as the numbers and new bridge location work out. Looks like your bracing will catch the edges of the bridge pretty much anywhere you put it. I'm guessing the bridge would end up centered between the sound holes. Only issue there might be that your pinky would end up in the sound hole when you're playing - at least if you play like me (hopefully you play better laughing6-hehe ).

I agree, both that it is shaping up and that you can lop off the first fret for a shorter scale. Lay it all out before you cut and make sure everything looks okay. Measure your new scale length using the new 12th fret when you locate the bridge.

The numbers are what im concerned about does it effectively change ANY of the fret dimensions ?

Steve , I know 5-6 basic chords and can strum a little , so basically I dont play at all laughing6-hehe scary huh
Yes it would move the bridge forward from 22.75 scale to 21.375 scale The actual distance the bridge would move forward is .625" approx

Nothing wrong with shortening the scale that way. May result in the neck/body joint landing inbetween two frets rather than right on the 12th/14th/whatever like guitars typically do, but on an instrument like this I don't think that matters.

On the other hand, banjos typically do have the bridge toward the back end, so it's not necessarily a bad thing. You might try tapping on it in each of the potential bridge positions to help decide which you think would sound better. My instinct is that the tone will be more "ang" with it in the far back position, and "ong" with it centered, if that makes sense :)

This will have Mandola Strings , Not Banjo Strings . There will be 8 strings

In this instance the body to fret joint doesnt really matter , as it is its at the 16th fret and will be at the 19th fret +or- 1/6" of an inch so that isnt an issue . The player will have about 14 open frets to play befor hus thumb even touches the heel .

Press on! It will look fine. If you don't like it, burst the neck to match the resonator.

Wud, if this thread was half as funny as Tony's thread, you might actually be able to get the cover charge.

But seeing how it turns out to be really sucking (refer to video people if you need explanation), I'll be sending you my bill for $5 to actually show up and provide you some audience viewership.

Filippo

I'll try to add something useless but funny to this thread as well. Free of charge. However, it is early and I need more coffee before I kick into funny overdrive. For now, please accept this mildly humorous goat pic as my first contribution:

Gonna have to tint the head plate to try and match the fret board , or tint both with some black to match the ebony bridge . I have been thinking about building a bridge but dont have enough of the same wood as fretboard to do it.

we shall see idunno

The round fretboard end and peghead seem right. I can't wait to see how they look on the round body.

Ok, something got me so I had to count. You marked ... 7, 10, 12 ... I usually mark 7, 9, and 12. Different strokes. Those sticks are going to make it hard to play chords beehive

I have been wondering the same myself . If you check most Mandolin's ( ones I have checked , its 7,10, 12 ) I have two guitars , One is 7. 10 , 12 .... the other is 7,9,12 idunno Maybe someone will pitch in and enlighten me as well .

Binding headplate and found enough material to make a bridge . Now all I have to do is tint the headplate to match .
