So petting the dog is not a euphamism, or just not receding to his "girlfriend?" BTW, it is too bad you aren't allowed in his thread. It is easily the funniest thread in OLF history, probably the history of the interweb!

I'm not sure whether I'm more upset about how good they look so far or how fast they're going together! [uncle]
I feel like we're being tag-teamed, but hey, I never had a chance to win that chisel anyway! laughing6-hehe

Filippo,

Why did you sign the inside "Fibber McGee"?

A major concession on this challenge was going with flat backs versus carved backs, but in retrospect, I wish we'd have gone that route and accepted the additional cost in time and materials

Just curious, but what do you consider to be the advantages of an arched back on a non-soundpost instrument like this? I like flat backs.

Looking great so far [:Y:]

I am stunned at how clean your work is (though not surprised). Your closed boxes are pristine. Looking forward to seeing the finished products.

I'd like to see that I-beam caul without the foil draped over it! What are you doing to work on the fretboard extension (I know even less about mandos than about guitars and ukes) :P

Note the 1/32" plywood - that gets glued to the back of the MOP to provide support while cutting the MOP

What type of glue do you use for that and how do you release the glue?

Thanks,

Eddie, I should have been more clear.

I glue the 1/32" plywood permanently to the back of the MOP with CA (super glue). This gives significant strength to the shell which helps during cutting, without interfering with either the cutting or the inlay. You can't lose! I then double stick tape this to a thin sliver of wood (spruce cutoff, whatever ...) and saw. The cutoff gives added strength but also gives me more to hold on to when working the cut.

Once the piece is cut, I use needle files to clean anything up and for any final shaping. Finally some Naphtha unsticks the inlay from the double stick tape. It's now ready to inlay. That's it!

Filippo

So, done this way, could you use wood glue to inlay instead of CA?

Usually just use the safety planer, but this is easier and cleaner.

And safer! Never got to understand what exactly is 'safe' about that Safety Planer thing.

Love that jig! Are the knobs on the sides there to allow adjustment of the ramp holding the neck blank? Thanks for the idea, Todd!

Wow! Those mando-do-dads are coming along very nicely guys!

Are you going to sand/round over the edges of the headstocks? I've had bad luck with square edges. I get much better looking finishes when I round them over smoothly....

Cheers,
Dave F.

That is some really pretty figure....shame to cover any of it up or distract from it with a burst. On the other hand, in YOUR hands, I know they'll look great either way. Maybe do one burst and one natural? Even "identical" twins aren't really identical.
