Looks like fun. I haven't done a carved top but it's on my project list.

So how does one work out a contour map like Todd did there if starting from scratch. Is there a tutorial somewhere? Or a primer of the basic principles of designing an arch that will work?

He used the arch templates that were in a previous picture. Then they placed them on the outline and plotted the depth of the arch at each position on the template. Once that is plotted, he connected the dots to get the topographic representation.

**just noticed Todd's post above -

*** Nice work guys !!

At Costa Guitars, our mystique has grown to such outrageous proportions that we are not even sure if we are Costa Guitars any longer.

Nice looking kerf boards.

I'm now curious as to the advantages of a fharging f hole as compared to a standard, run-of-the-mill f hole?

I can see that Todd and I have a lot in common. We both make instruments, we’re both swell lookers and neither one of us is Chinese.

Should amateur builders refer to farging f holes as fargings?

Are you calling me a neocon? You shouldn't call me a neocon. My father called me a neocon once. . . just once. . .

As the late, great, Freddie Prinze would say "looking good!" bliss
I must say I'm a little disappointed in the fharging f holes, I don't see any difference from normal f holes. I guess they must just sound different!

Bahahaha. Dude I'm pulling 60 hour weeks at the office, working on this Mando AND a certain Flamenco which should be done around the same time. Spend less time petting the dog, what can I say laughing6-hehe

Filippo

p.s. it's time for brews at the pub with ya, but I ain't got no time!

Somehow I bet he doesn't even have a dog.

So petting the dog is not a euphamism, or just not receding to his "girlfriend?" BTW, it is too bad you aren't allowed in his thread. It is easily the funniest thread in OLF history, probably the history of the interweb!

I feel like we're being tag-teamed, but hey, I never had a chance to win that chisel anyway! laughing6-hehe

A major concession on this challenge was going with flat backs versus carved backs, but in retrospect, I wish we'd have gone that route and accepted the additional cost in time and materials

Just curious, but what do you consider to be the advantages of an arched back on a non-soundpost instrument like this? I like flat backs.

Looking great so far [:Y:]
