Thanks alex. I was very pleased with how it turned out. Thank goodness wenge is dark and uniform in color. That patch is a pretty good match. I'm just glad I didn't have to scrap it and start over.

Trying zpoxy for the first time. It's gonna take a couple coats to fill in the HUGE wenge pores. But man it's stating to look good!

That is the most misguided thing I have ever read on this forum. Well...aside from one of the posts in the dovetail vs. M&T thread where the guy said saving a pound by...well...lets not even go there. Don't grow up to be like me. You will spend a fortune on custom pants and oversized condoms. eek beehive

Sorry Tony, but you're gonna have to come up with something funnier than that to retain your title of forum comedy king. Alex, truly that was the most brilliant stealth insult I've heard in a long time [clap]

And Zeke, the guitar's looking great. Excellent recovery from your router disaster [:Y:] Good luck with the pore filling. I know I'm not going to bother trying when I get to using my wenge harp guitar set. Although with that many sound ports, I may not need a hole in the soundboard at all

+1 on Alex's comment.... laughing6-hehe

Looking great Zeke. I reckon it'll be a guitar to be proud of, and I think fixing the blunders is as much the mark of a craftsman as not making any......

Thanks Dennis. Yeah those pores are big. When I wipe with naphtha on the back I could turn it over and see it leaking through the pores on the inside! Other than that though I've really enjoyed working with the wenge. I like the look and it bends really well. Probably mg favorite wood to work with thus far in my small 3 guitar journey.

Thanks to everyone else for the kind comments.

Did you get any wenge splinters? I hear they hurt a lot.

And Alex really got me. I have no witty retort. If I were to post a pic, I'd get banned and this thread would get locked, so I will just leave it alone. Zeke deserves to finish his build in this thread.

No I didn't get any splinters. I was surprised because I have heard into pretty much inevitable with wenge. Probably had to do with my hands being tough enough to keep those pathetic wood splinters out. I get lots of metal splinters on an almost daily basis so my hands are a little rougher than most. Could be why I didn't get any. If only the rest of my body were as tough (like my immune system). Whatever I've had for the last month and a half and though I was finally over, came back with a vengeance last night. I was planning on getting another coat of pore filler tonight but I'm going to bed instead. Here is anther teaser pic though

I'm absolutely falling in love with the silking on this top! I've got two more tops like this and I think they are getting put in the private collection. I need to find some more of this quality. I am beginning to think I may have to keep this guitar too bliss

Where'd you get the tops from, Zeke?

LMI. I think they were only $30 a set. I'm very impressed by them. I dunno if I got lucky or if they are all that good but for what I payed they get two big thumbs up

The correct response was -- I have to breathe slowly and deliberately when it gets that big, the blood loss is tremendous. . .

Thanks Bryan. Ingot some good feedback on it yesterday. Seems its a little overbraced. Hahaha I may try to carve them down or I may just go lighter on the next one.

You and Craig have inspired me to try French polish. Maybe on the next build. One question I have is what you were doing with the olive oil. Somehow I missed that part.

Author:  Bryan Bear [ Sun May 19, 2013 3:04 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Zeke's OM guitar shaped wood

When you get to the French polishing phase, you are rubbing on super thin layers of dilute shellac. Most of the alcohol flashes off immediately. This allows all those circles to build up tiny layers of she'll act that melt into what is already there. The mostly dry shellac can get a little tacky and the pad can start to feel like it is dragging. Just a tiny bit of olive oil lubricates the pad. Use as little as you can get away with because that oil will have to rise to the surface after the session is complete. Spiriting off with just alcohol after each session can help get rid of it too. As with all elements of the process, you need less oil than you think.
