I sanded and ebonized a fretboard on the neck and didn't get the masking tape sealed well enough. The result was as you probably guessed... bleed thru onto the neck. I sanded and repainted the neck and now want to sand the ebony stain back to the original wood. The bare wood fretboard would make for a nice contrast to the dark neck. My question: Once I sand to bare wood can I apply a fretboard oil directly to the wood? |

Yes but I wouldn't do it until all the finishing is complete |

All other finishing is complete before I oil the fretboard. And the lemon oil is the only finish I give the fretboard but I do use Australian timber (Mulga wood) and it only needs lemon oil. |

Walnut oil may be a better choice, I don't believe lemon oil is a drying oil. |
