Anyone know how to remove this style of pickup?
It appears there is a pocket milled into the sound board that this nickel cover is sitting in.
I didn't see any screws under the pick guard.

Looks like the pickgusrd is held on with screws. Can't tell if pickguard is raised or flush. If flush, have you removed it to see if there is some kind of access underneath? |

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I took the pick guard off to get a better look. There was nothing under there. The cover is not held in from the top by any screws you can see. |

Man, that is an old guitar!    Could it have been permanently mounted during construction?

1952 - 1955 from what I've read. These are the only series with a single pickup at the bridge. They were built by Kay and re branded for Sears. If it was glued in I'd not want to heat for fear of disturbing any potting material on the pickup, I know some windings used wax.

Here's an update, I figured a way to take a peak at the underside of the pickup. An iPhone will fit through the f-hole, just needed to a way to get it out easily. I still had the high E string on my desk, some gaffers tape to attach and I'm ready.  I used an LED bar light  Put that in the pickguard f-hole  Here's the first photo before I lowered the phone all the way in. That's the light in the other f-hole. I was able to snap the picture from the outside of the body, the screen was long enough to hit the virtual button.  My finger was not long enough to reach the screen, I used a touch screen pen with the rubber tip  There's the iPhone under the pickup with the camera angle turned around  Here's the picture from under the pickup, too close to focus properly. You can see the two wood screw tips bulging the brace wood. So now I know that the pickup chassis is screwed down, question is, how do I remove the nickle plated cover to access the screw heads? Any suggestions are welcome.

Just found this old capacitor between the volume and tone pots. I'll bet that one is tired. Most of the 30's & 40's tube radios I've restored had these, another item on my to do list.

Best guess is that the nickel cover is a friction fit. So I'd attempt gently to lever it off, possibly levering both sides simultaneously. Stop of course if there's no movement. |
